The name Axis Mundi is used in different traditional cultures in reference to the 'center' of the earth. By this meant a spiritual point which links the interior forces of the earth with celestial powers. Romanians believe that point to be the Carpathian peak of Omul Mountain (photo above) in the Bucegi Range that rises above the Bran Valley.

The Axis Mundi is symbolized in numerous ways still visible in present-day traditional Romania. Colorful costumes are said by one expert, Professor Sorin Apan of Brasov (Kronstadt), to be "living temples" as they carry symbolic language of ancient times that link man to the seasonal rythms of the earth.
